Fisherman Dies After Fall Off Middletown Rocks

The fisherman was pulled from the water near Sachuset Point Wildlife Refuge after falling off the rocks.

MIDDLETOWN, RI — A fisherman died in the water off of Middletown Tuesday morning after falling off the rocks, fire officials said. He was brought back to shore, where he was pronounced dead.

According to the Middletown Fire Department, emergency responders were called to the Sachuset Point Wildlife Refuge around 8:30 a.m. following a report that a fisherman had fallen into the water.

With the help of witnesses, police and fire officials were able to find the man in the water using a rescue jet ski. The man was pulled from the water and brought back to Third Beach. He was then taken to Newport Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The fisherman's identity has not been released, pending notification of the family.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Coast Guard said they were not part of the initial recovery operation and were notified after the fact.
