Middletown Woman Charged With Manslaughter In Infant's Death

Tia Anderson, 26, was charged with manslaughter in the death of a 4-month-old boy, for whom she was the legal guardian, in Middletown.

MIDDLETOWN, RI — A Middletown woman has pleaded not guilty in the death of a 4-month-old boy. Tia Anderson, 26, entered the plea to the charge of manslaughter when she was arraigned at Newport County Superior Court on Thursday.

The boy was found unresponsive when Middletown police responded to a call at the Oxbow Farms Housing complex in June. Rescue efforts were unsuccessful and the boy was pronounced dead after being brought to Newport Hospital.

The Rhode Island Department of Health says the cause of death was acute intoxication from the combined effects of several ingredients found in over-the-counter cough and cold medicines. The judge in the case ordered a $50,000 bail for Anderson, who was the boy's legal guardian. Her next court date is Dec. 18.
