MIDDLETOWN, RI — Middletown's Third Beach and Newport's Easton Beach have both been cleared to open for the weekend after being closed to swimming on Friday.

The Rhode Island Department of Health recommended swimming be allowed at the beaches after high bacteria levels that caused the closures had returned to safe levels.

The beaches were two of three on Aquidneck Island, also including Peabody Beach, that were closed on Thursday.
