Pells Ramp Project Begins In Middletown

Roadway improvements beginning at West Main Road entails repaving and a bike and pedestrian path.

MIDDLETOWN, RI — A yearlong project to repave and construct a shared bike and pedestrian path on West Main Road in Middletown has begun. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation said Phase I of the Pell Ramps Project is expected to be completed in Fall 2021.

Phase 1 of the project includes making improvements from the intersection of West Main Road in Middletown, entering Newport on Coddington Highway and finishing at the signal lights at JT Connell Highway next to the RK Center shopping plaza.

The RI DOT said the road will be resurfaced and repaved, modifications will be made to the drainage system, curbing and sidewalks will be refurbished and the pedestrian and bike shared path will be constructed.

Road work will take place between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. One lane will be open in each direction during construction during the day, with lane shifts and alternating traffic possible during night work.
