Three viable career paths and economic engines that could lead Rhode island out of its economic doldrums
I would personally argue that there are three viable career paths and economic engines that could lead Rhode island out of its economic doldrums. They are  the Boat building ,  Manufacturing and Cyber Defense and Technology market places . The boating Industry should be owned in the USA, by Rhode Island, It has the history, Geography and superior educational and building platforms. Great educational foundations such as the IYRS-International yacht restoration School and RI Marine Trades Association have proven programs and demonstrated proficiencies, and established boat building facilities such as Electric Boat and hinckley yachts are among the best in the world. In the manufacturing arena, we continually hear that there are jobs , but a limited supply of skilled workers. Active Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) programs need to be developed locally in our area high school  and middle schools. This momentum appears to have started. Finally I have heard that a viable marketplace for alternative business opportunities for our ample  supply of Defense Industry companies is in the Cyber Defense and technology fields. They want to provide defense workers and programs for this marketplace and see it as an alternative business strategy for growth. Such Programs at the University of rhode Island cannot supply graduates fast enough to fulfill the needs locally and on a national scale. Our own Congressman Jim Langevin is active and fully supportive of national investments in the Cyber arena. Rhode Island needs education Career Path curriculum developed and drilled top down from the Governors Office, to our local High School and Middle school Levels to interest students in these viable and promising careers and marketplaces. On this Thursday august 15th our  Newport County Mentor/Co Op Group will host a Career Day at Second beach for newport county high school students from 11-3, and other interested parties . A total of 15 companies and educational foundations have signed up to attend and present their programs , All three of these   segments will be represented. Please make every effort to encourage local students to attend. I personally believe that these three legs , the Boat building , Manufacturing and Cyber defense and Technology marketplaces will provide the foundation for the educational  platform needed to drive rhode islands next economic revolution.  Â
