10K Without Power In Rhode Island Amid Powerful Thunderstorms
Isolated showers and thunderstorms will dissipate heading into the later evening hours.

NEWPORT, RI — More than 10,000 Rhode Islanders were without power Tuesday evening as scattered, powerful storms made their way across the state.
The fast-moving thunderstorms hit Rhode Island throughout the evening hours, dissipating after 8 p.m. ahead of another hot, humid day Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, the National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the entire state, which was in effect until 8 p.m. In addition, a special marine warning was issued for coastal areas of the state as thunderstorms kicked up dangerously high waves.

As of abut 8 p.m., a little over 10,000 Rhode Islanders were without power, according to National Grid. Most of the outages were clustered in Newport County, which accounted for more than 7,200. Providence County made up for approximately 2,500, with scattered outages in Kent and Washington Counties. Only Bristol County had no reported outages.
National Grid estimated that all outages would be restored no later than 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Drivers who encounter fallen tree limbs or power lines in the street are reminded to always seek an alternate route rather than try to drive underneath. Always treat downed wires as if they are live.
