High school juniors, seniors and incoming CCRI freshman are eligible to take part in the free, two-week program.

NEWPORT, RI — The Community College of Rhode Island is sponsoring a free, two-week math class this August. Juniors, seniors and incoming college freshmen can brush up on their higher-level math skills before the fall.

The program will be free to Aquidneck Island high schoolers, as well as incoming CCRI students who live in the area. Upon competition, each student will receive a $50 gift certificate to a restaurant in Newport.

The classes will run from Aug. 2 to 5 and 10 to 12, from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. each day. Aug. 16 will serve as a make-up day for the Victory Day holiday. Classes will be held in-person at CCRI's Newport campus.

The program, funded by a grant from the Alletta Morris McBean Charitable Trust, was developed by math professors at the college to improve college placement scores and help students better prepare to pass college-level classes. At the start and end of the program. students will take the ACCUPLACER placement exam. This will allow students "to enroll in college-level math courses more quickly while still enrolled in high school through the state’s dual and concurrent enrollment programs.," CCRI said.
