20th Rhode Island International Film Festival Set To Kick Off

This installment of the festival promises to be the biggest and most diverse yet.

NEWPORT, RI — Flickers' Rhode Island International Film Festival is celebrating its 20th year and is making sure its the grandest festival yet.

The events are being held in various locations throughout the state from Aug.9 to 14. The festival is the biggest of its kind in New England and is the region's only Academy Award-qualifying film festival in the short films categories.

Screenings of feature and short films from filmmakers from around the world are scheduled, along with panel discussions with filmmakers and critics. The 17th edition of ScriptBiz, a workshop dedicated to the art of screenwriting and successfully selling a script should also be a highlight for attendees and would-be auteurs.

Some local flavor will be present in the form of a H.P. Lovecraft literary walking tour and a documentary film about famed Rhode Island Senator Claiborne Pell and his crossing of the aisle in order to pass legislation granting financial aid to all students, or the Pell Grant.

Flickers, a Rhode Island-based arts collaborative, has been producing educational programs, films, and cultural events for over 30 years. Tickets for the festival and the locations its screenings can be found here.
