Amid Lifeguard Staffing Shortages, Red Flags On Easton's Beach

NEWPORT, RI — The city of Newport is turning to flags to help make up for a shortage of lifeguards at Easton's Beach this summer.

Beachgoers may see single red flags flying over unguarded sections of the shore, the city said. Unlike a double red flag, which signals that the water is off-limits for swimming, a single red flag means that a high hazard exists, and that a lifeguard is not on duty in the area.

The city expects the lifeguard shortages to persist throughout the summer season, and urged all swimmers to be safe and aware when visiting the beach.

Follow these tips to stay safe at the beach this summer:

• Never swim alone.
• Avoid areas marked high hazard, and stay in guarded areas of the beach.
• Always supervise children in and around water.
• Obey all whistle and commands from lifeguards.

The city is still accepting applications for lifeguards, with increased hourly rates for both part- and full-time employees. Applications are available online.
