Beaches Closed, Events Canceled As Elsa Slams Newport

NEWPORT, RI — Several events were canceled, and the beach closed in Newport Friday as Tropical Storm Elsa hit the state.

With high surfs and dangerous rip currents kicked up by the storm, the city closed Easton's Beach to the public all day Friday.

In addition, the storm prompted the cancellation of two events in the city: Thursday evening's children's concert and Friday night's NIMFest Concert at King Park.
