Construction On Newport Pell Bridge Enters Phase 3
Phase three is expected to last through November, according to the Rhode Island Bridge and Turnpike Authority.

NEWPORT, RI — Phase three of construction on the Pell Bridge in Newport begins this week, and is expected to last through November.
The Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority said phase two wrapped up a month ahead of schedule. Phase three is the last phase of bridge work scheduled for this year. Preparation work will start Tuesday, with hydro-demolition and milling beginning Aug. 17.
This phase will focus on working on the eastbound passing lane, the center lane heading into Newport, as well as replacing an area not scheduled for work until after the Department of Transportation's Newport Ramp Realignment Project.

During this phase, two lanes will be open leaving Newport during the afternoon rush hour. The department will monitor traffic levels and open two lanes heading into Newport during the morning rush hour if needed. During non-peak hours, there may be one lane open in each direction, the department said, allowing workers access to two lanes.
Throughout construction, the speed limit on the bridge is reduced to 25 mph. Over-wide and overweight vehicles larger than 8 feet, 6 inches or heavier than 80,000 pounds are prohibited.
