The Rhode Island Department of Health closed the beach for high bacteria levels, the first closure of the season.

NEWPORT, RI — Easton's Beach in Newport is closed to swimming due to high bacteria levels, the Rhode Island Department of Health said. This is the first such closure of the 2021 summer season.

Also known as First Beach, the closure was announced Thursday night. Goddard Park Beach in Warwick is also closed ta this time.

The Department of Health will continue to test the water until bacteria levels return to the safe threshold. For more information on closures, call the department's automated beach closure line at 401-222-2751.
