NEWPORT, RI — One officer suffered minor injuries Tuesday night at Fort Adams after police were called around 10 p.m. to stop a man riding a big blue forklift in the main parking lot. According to police Lt. Frank Rosa, when officers arrived Ross E. Ahlborg, 27, of ran the forklift at police and tried to ram their cruisers. Witnesses told police Ahlborg was having "mental health issues" and might be armed with a BB gun and a bow and arrows.

Police said he went after the cruisers and tried to spear them with the forks. Police followed the fork lift until Ahlborg drove into the grass and was trapped in mud behind Eisenhower House. Officers broke the cabin glass to grab him, but he refused to give up. They used a taser, and a fight broke out between Ahlborg and the police before he was finally taken into custody.

He was treated at Newport Hospital for cuts to his head, arms and hands.
