Former 'Barry's Of Newport' Employee Suspected Of Embezzlement

The company called police to investigate what happened to customers' refund checks. The suspect is at large. An accomplice has been arrested

NEWPORT, RI — Police have arrested a Dorchester, Mass., woman suspected of being the accomplice in a scheme to embezzle money from Barry's of Newport, car dealership. Shaleeda Barboza, 32, was charged on Monday with Embezzlement (Fraudulent conversion over $100) and Conspiracy (Bad Check). She turned herself into police Monday at 11:22 a.m.

According to the police narrative, the dealership suspected a former employee of stealing customers' refund checks. Barboza was not a Barry's employee but allegedly acted as an accomplice. Her role was to cash the checks, police allege. On April 24 at 1:38 p.m., police took the complaint and started an investigation.

The former employee left the dealership earlier. The departure was voluntary, and the employee was not fired, police said. That person is still being sought, police said. No additional information was available.
