Hanos Resigns, Several Newport Candidates Have Dropped Out

David Hanos resigned during a special school committee meeting on July 31. Several other candidates have also withdrawn.

NEWPORT, RI—On Tuesday, during a special school committee meeting, David Hanos, the chairman, resigned. He also said he was withdrawing from the November election. Hanos said he made the decision to leave the school committee for personal reasons. Patch asked him about his decision. In an e-mail message, he replied, "I don't have much to say currently. My reasons for leaving are personal. If someday I decide to elaborate I will but that would be old news. I hope you understand and that the only commentary is 'I'm leaving for personal reasons.'"

A previous attempt to reach him over his school committee e-mail address failed because the address had been disabled.

City Hall confirmed he is not a candidate in November. Tracy Nelson, in the Canvassing and Elections office, sent an updated list of the candidates for local offices.
