Memorial Day Weekend Forecast: Rain, Chilly Temps In The Forecast

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff to summer in Rhode Island, but sunny skies and hot weather aren't expected.

NEWPORT, RI — Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer in Rhode Island, and this year, many residents will mark the new season with a three-day weekend filled with memorial services, outdoor events and backyard barbecues.

At this point, your weekend is likely planned to a T. But, as most of us know, Mother Nature could always step in and ruin that carefully outlined itinerary with a trifecta of rain, storms and cloudy skies.

Unfortunately, it looks as if that might be the case for Memorial Day weekend in Southern New England, according to the most recent forecast for our area.

Rain is on the way starting Friday afternoon, with rain likely throughout the weekend. Showers will move in on Friday afternoon, continuing overnight. Saturday is expected to have the worst weather, with temperatures only reaching the high 50s. Showers are again possible on Sunday, with slightly warmer temperatures. Memorial Day itself is expected to be partly cloudy, with a 30 percent chance of showers.
