More Work On Newport Bridge Will Mean Delays: RITBA

One lane will be closed starting Nov. 26 at 4 a.m., meaning travel on the Newport side of the bridge will be reduced to one lane westbound.

NEWPORT, RI—Crews will be pouring concrete on the Newport Pell Bridge starting on Nov. 26 at 4 a.m. The work, which is part of an ongoing construction project, will require closing a lane on the Newport side of the bridge, according to the state Turnpike and Bridge Authority. This means one-lane travel westbound for about 1,000 feet, RITBA said.

The job is expected to wind up on Nov. 29 at 2 p.m., but weather may cause delays, the officials said.

The project has been delayed due to rain over the past few weeks, RITBA said.

"The work involves completing the final stage of the concrete safety walk renovations on the north side of the bridge," the authority said in a press release. "This work has been ongoing during the 2018 construction season and involved the demolition of the original walkway, the repair of the existing rebar embedded in the concrete, and the pouring of a new concrete walkway."

RITBA said the contractor will be working 24 hours a day on the job.
