MIDDLETOWN, RI — About 1,500 vaccine appointments for the state-run coronavirus vaccine site in Middletown will be added to the scheduling portal Thursday, the Rhode Island Department of Health announced. The appointments are all for Friday and Saturday.

The department will also add new appointments after 5 p.m. Friday as previously scheduled. 3,250 new appointments will be added at that time, a spokesperson for the department said.

It's unclear exactly what time the new appointments will be added to the site Thursday.

There were very few first-dose appointments available in Rhode Island this week, due to a high number of second-dose appointments. More first-dose appointments will be available next week, the department said.

RIDOH expects to give out more than 62,000 vaccine doses this week, and has currently the capacity to distribute up to 100,000 doses weekly. Next week, the state is set to receive more than 50,000 doses, and state leaders are calling for the federal government to provide an additional 50,000 doses per week, Gov. Dan McKee said Thursday.
