NEWPORT, RI — The temporary detour on Newport's Spring Street has been extended, pending the results of environmental testing. The changed traffic pattern was originally scheduled to end on Oct. 15.

According to the City of Newport, the Historic Spring Leadership Committee requested the environmental testing at the site near the former Coffey's Garage on Spring Street. The garage was demolished in late September to make room for a planned park at the site of the city's historic spring.

The new pattern has been in place since July, testing the proposed traffic flow around the park site. The City Council is expected to make a final decision based on the results of a detailed traffic study.

While the detour is in place, drivers can access Washington Square and Farewell Street via Stone Street. Anyone traveling west of the Newport bridge is encouraged to take Memorial Boulevard to America's Cup Avenue.

More information on the ongoing project is available on the city's website.
