Newport City Council To Interview School Committee Candidates
Eight people will be interviewed on March 4 and 5, starting at 5:30 p.m.

NEWPORT, RI — The Newport City Council will begin interviewing applicants to fill the School Committee vacancy starting next week. Eight people applied to fill the seat left empty following the resignation of Kathleen M. Silvia.
The interviews will be held on March 4 and 5, starting at 5:30 p.m. in the City Council chambers or second-floor conference room. Four people will be interviewed each day in 20-minute slots, and the interviews will be open to the public.

Silvia formally resigned on Jan. 27, leaving the City Council with 30 days to fill the vacancy, per the City Charter. Whomever is chosen to fill the seat will serve until someone is elected to the seat in November.
Following the interviews, the council will vote to appoint one of the applicants at a future meeting.
