Newport Cliff Walk Called RI's Most Beautiful Spot
The Cliff Walk was designated a National Recreation Trail in 1975 and is among Newport's most popular attractions.

NEWPORT, RI — This month, Conde Nast Traveler named the most beautiful place in every U.S. state. Rhode Island is full of beautiful vacation destinations, but there was one location that stood out to them: Newport's Cliff Walk
Overlooking Easton's Beach, the Cliff Walk threads a 3.5 mile path alongside some of the most expensive and storied Newport mansions, many relics of the Gilded Age. It goes from the western end of Easton's (or First Beach) and travels to Reject's Beach at the eastern edge of Bailey's Beach (the Spouting Rock Beach Club). The "Rejects" didn't make it into society.
Along the way, the Cliff Walk passes by Doris Duke's "Rough Point" mansion, as well as "The Breakers," "Rosecliff" and "Marble House." It is the first National Recreation Trail to be named in New England. Some of the walk is rocky and rough, and tourists are warned they are on the Cliff Walk at their own risk. However, the section near Salve Regina University and the Forty Steps is relatively easy to navigate. It can be accessed from side streets, such as Narragansett Avenue and Webster Street.

For anyone hoping to visit this summer, Newport's an easy trip by car. Starting on Friday, day trippers from Providence can also travel by ferry. Another ferry service runs from Jamestown.
"No state is the same, and each has its stars, the kind of sights that make you catch your breath and nearly veer off the highway," Conde Nast writes. The magazine writes that the list "only scrapes the surface" of what the U.S. has to offer, so consider it as a starting point.
