Newport Mayor Harry Winthrop Says He's Not Running Again

The official deadline for filing papers is Wednesday, but the mayor has posted a letter to Newport citizens on his Facebook page.

NEWPORT, RI — Newport's Mayor Harry Winthrop Winthrop will not be a candidate for city council in November, he has told his Facebook followers. Winthrop, who served terms from 1990 to 1993, in 1995 and from 2011 to 2012, said he served for 11 years but decided not to seek a seventh term. The official deadline for filing papers is Wednesday, but the mayor posted the news in advance in a letter to Newport citizens on his Facebook page.

Last election, Councilor John Florez announced he would not run again but changed his mind after constituents flooded him with pleas to stay in politics. Florez won another term but ultimately resigned after deciding to move to Texas for business reasons.

Candidates must file papers this week on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday. The deadline is 4 p.m.
