Newport Residents Asked To 'Adopt' Nearby Storm Drains

The city asked residents to help clear leaves and debris from the storm drains near their homes.

NEWPORT, RI — The changing seasons paired with several strong winds storms means that fallen leaves are everywhere in Rhode Island. In an effort to keep up with the demand of clearing storm drains around Newport, city officials have asked residents to "adopt" the drains near their homes.

The Department of Utilities issued a plea to residents, saying that with 2,544 catch basins throughout the city, it's nearly impossible to keep up and make sure drains are clear.

"This task falls to staff from the Water Pollution Control Division, who inspect, clean, and repair catch basins across the City on an ongoing basis throughout the year," a release from the city read in part. "During the fall however, keeping each of the City’s catch basins clear can be a rather daunting task."

Keeping basins cleared of leaves and other debris helps prevent ponding on streets during heavy rain, as well as keeps polluted runoff out of Newport Harbor. Even a thin layer of leaves can block the grate, the city said.

Residents or business owners interested in "adopting" their basins are asked to keep the following guidelines in mind.

  • Only clear drains when it's safe: watch out for traffic and do not clear grates that are in the middle of the street.
  • Only clear drains at the curb, and stay on the curbside while clearing.
  • Be careful around standing water to avoid slipping or stepping on a sharp object.
  • Don't try to lift the grates, as they are very heavy.
  • Only clear surface leaves and debris. The city will take care of trash or anything hazardous inside the basin.

If drains remain clogged after they have been cleared, call the Department of Utilities at 845-5600.
