Obituary: Margaretta K. Landry, 87,

Margaretta Kenney Landry was a civic-minded woman who served the community of Newport and the State of Rhode Island.

Margaretta Katherine (Kenney) Landry, 87, of 9 Kempsen Street, Newport, Rhode Island died peacefully on Sunday, September 18th, 2016, surrounded by her loving family after a recent battle with dementia.

She was the beloved wife of Francis Deven Landry and was married to him for over 63 years before he died in 2012. She was the daughter of dearly departed Daniel and Eleanor (Noonan) Kenney. She was pre-deceased by her admiring older brothers, Harry, William, Frank and Jack Kenney. She was born at home in Newport on August 1, 1929. In her youth, she spent her winters in Palm Beach, Florida and summers in Newport.

She was a lifetime communicant of St. Joseph’s Church, Newport, RI, and a former member of Ladies Altar and Rosary Sodality. She was a graduate of Rogers High School, class of 1947. She was a member of the Catholic Daughter’s of America and taught Christian Doctrine at St. Joseph’s Church for years. She was a retired Special Education Teacher Assistant for the Newport School Department.

Margaretta Kenney Landry was a civic-minded woman who served the community of Newport and the State of Rhode Island. She was an elected delegate to the Rhode Island Constitutional Convention in 1986. She served as President of the Newport City Women’s Democratic Club many years ago and also served on the Newport City Democratic Committee. As President of the now defunct Trigon Club she worked to support this charitable organization serving the neediest of Newport. She enjoyed singing and raising money for charity in the annual Trigon Club’s musical shows. She also enjoyed bowling and swimming and was a member of Ye Viking Ladies Bowling League when bowling was the social outlet for women. She is a longtime member of The Peabody Beach Club. She also enjoyed her weekly Thursday Ladies’ Night Out in Newport with her dear friends (Mary, Mickey, and Noni).

Margaretta Landry leaves six children and spouses: Kathleen Landry and her husband, Patrick Zeirten of Vancouver, Canada; Cheryl Ann (Landry) McCarthy and her deceased husband, David McCarthy, of Middletown, RI; Francis Deven Landry Jr. of Newport, RI; Michael Scott Landry and his deceased wife, Sharon (Chamberlain) Landry of Maui, Hawaii and Redding, California; Carol Ann (Landry) Blanchard and her husband, James Blanchard, of Narragansett, RI; and Paul Martin Landry of Middletown. She leaves seven grandchildren: Lynn Amaral, Nicole FitzGerald and her spouse David, Monique McHenry and her spouse Dr. Kalev Freeman, Meagan Landry, Gretchen Landry, Ashley Szulczewski and her husband Garret Munoz, and Austin Szulczewski, as well as five great-grandchildren: Julia, Liam and Abigail FitzGerald; Marcel McHenry, and Giselle Munoz. She leaves several nieces and nephews and their families.

She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Her values were centered in her Catholic faith and her family. She enjoyed time with her family as well as days at the beach. She was affectionately called “Nana Sweetie” and she will be sorely missed by her family and friends. The family extends gratitude for the excellent care at the end of life that she received by the nurses and CNAs of Beacon Hospice and Blenheim. They also wish to acknowledge her dedicated primary care doctor, Dr. Parameswaran, at Southcoast Health.

Calling hours will be held at O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home at 465 Spring Street Newport, RI from 4-6pm on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 and the funeral mass at St. Joseph’s Church, Broadway, Newport, RI at 10:00 am on Wednesday, September 21st, 2016. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Joseph’s Church, Newport, RI.
