Observation Deck, Bike Path Might Be In Newport's Bridge Future

In time for the Newport Bridge's 50th anniversary, the Turnpike and Bridge Authority announces ideas for the future.

NEWPORT, RI —Fifty years ago next June 28, the Newport Bridge opened to cars. As the anniversary celebration approaches, the state Turnpike and Bridge Authority is looking forward as well as back. Wednesday, Buddy Croft, the authority's executive director, said talked about some of the special events, which will go on all year. Besides a re-dedication ceremony, plans call for an antique car show and bridge crossing and exhibits. (Profits from a jubilee dinner and private donations — but no tolls — will pay for the events.)

But while looking back at the 50 years, RITBA also has announced ideas for the future that will boost tourism, showcase Newport, and "monetize"the bridge's assets, Croft said.

Among the ideas RITBA floated Wednesday: an observation deck atop the bridge; and a bike path and a pedestrian path possibly on a lower deck.

Observation Deck

The observation deck would overlook the Jamestown side and be built atop the west tower, which is 400 feet tall. People would reach the deck by riding an elevator up the side of the tower, RITBA said.

Bike/ Pedestrian Paths

The bike and pedestrian paths would go on the Mount Hope Bridge and the Jamestown Verrazzano Bridge, as well as the Newport Bridge. The Sakonnet Bridge already has a bike path.

Croft said this is the time "to reflect and celebrate this milestone and look back at the last fifty years, while also looking ahead to the future and the exciting things that could come.”
