PawSox To Share Profits, Offer "Kid Free" Days

As the team prepares to move out of Pawtucket, PawSox officials are committing to staying involved in the community.

PAWTUCKET, R.I. -- The Pawtucket Red Sox committed to remaining a part of the local community on Monday, promising to donate all profits to the 2019 season to the city. In addition, the team will offer "kid free" games during the week, offering free admission to children Monday through Friday.

2019 marks 50 years since Pawtucket became affiliated with the Boston Red Sox. The team announced in 2018 that it will be relocating to Worcester, Massachusetts by 2021.

PawSox Vice Chairman Mike Tamburro said at the team's press conference that there are two ways for the team to handle the transition.

"We either can play out the string, mail it in, do our time, or we can embrace the community the way we always have. In true PawSox fashion, we want to sprint to the end, we want to do it right, we want to make this city and this state proud of us to the very end," Tamburro said.

In a plan titled "Celebrate Rhode Island: 50 Years Together," the team hopes to do more for children, families, and their community during its remaining time in the Ocean State.

"This year, the budget doesn't promise to have profits," said PawSox President Charles Steinberg. "If we do have profits this year, we are going to share them 50-50 with the city of Pawtucket. The better the PawSox do, the better the city does."

In addition, the team plans to visit other cities and towns in Rhode Island through "Road Show" events, where children and families will have a chance to interact with current and former PawSox and Red Sox players.

Steiberg added that the team will do an act of service in each city or town that they visit.

"It may be small. It may mean visiting a senior center or providing socks to children when it gets cold. But instead of us saying what you need, what we want to do is work with the public officials in each town," Steinberg said."We would like to do a good deed."

During April and May, children aged 12 and under will be offered free admission to PawSox games on Monday through Friday nights. At the end of the school year, all students in kindergarten through twelfth grade who successfully completed their grade can get free admission to a game of their choice in June, July or August through the "Swing Into Summer" program.

"We will continue to do whatever we can to support the communities of this region, regardless of where we're playing, because we're staying in the same region," Steinberg said, adding that relationships with local schools and charities will continue even after the team has left Rhode Island.

Pawtucket Mayor Donald Grebien thanked the team for their continued commitment to the city, saying the partnership has been invaluable.

The announcement came on Truck Day, when the Boston Red Sox equipment truck made a brief stop at McCoy Stadium on its way down to Florida for Spring Training.
