Providence Boy, 14, Drowns Near Beavertail Light

The victim was fishing with his father over the weekend when he slipped on the rocks and fell into the water, the DEM said.

JAMESTOWN, RI — A Providence teenager drowned near Beavertail Lighthouse in Jamestown Sunday evening, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management confirmed Monday. The victim was identified as 14-year-old Daniel Carrascoza.

According to the DEM, Carrascoza was fishing with his father when he slipped on the rocks and fell into the water. The father and two bystanders pulled the boy from the water and performed CPR until emergency responders arrived, around 6:25 p.m.

Carrascoza was rushed to Newport Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"DEM recognizes how shocking and devastating the death of a child is and offers condolences to the Carrascoza family for the unbearable loss of their son," the department said in a statement.

Correction: a previous version of this story incorrectly spelled the victim's name and said emergency responders arrived at 7:15 p.m., due to a misstatement from the DEM.
