RI Named Among Least-Financially Literate States: WalletHub
Rhode Island ranked in the bottom 10 in the country when it comes to financial literacy.
PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island is one of the least financially literate states in the country, according to a new study from WalletHub. The personal finance website compared several metrics including high school finance grades to how many residents have rainy-day funds to rank the 50 states and the District of Columbia.
Rhode Island ranked near the bottom of the list at number 42 overall. In last place was Alaska, along with Louisiana and Arkansas.
Of the three main metric categories, the Ocean State performed the worst in "financial planning and habits," coming in at number 47. It fared better in the others, "WalletLiteracy" and "financial knowledge and education," ranking number 18 and 26, respectively.

These overall category ranking were determined by comparing many factors, ranging from the median credit score to public high school graduation rate to the percentage of unbanked people in the state.
Virginia was ranked the most-financially literate state in the country. New England neighbor New Hampshire made the top five, while Massachusetts was near the middle at number 19.
