Seasonal Free Parking Extended In Newport To June 1
The start of the paid parking season in Newport has been delayed due to the coronavirus.

NEWPORT, RI — Visitors to Newport can park for free for a little while longer. The city pushed the start of paid parking from the usual May 1 to June 1 amid the coronavirus pandemic.
The residential parking program has also been delayed from May 1 to June 1. Residents can apply for passes on the city's website.
City streets will have metered parking from June 1 to Oct. 31. Paid parking at lots such as Touro Street Lot, Long Wharf Lot, and Narragansett Avenue near Forty Steps is also expected to start on June 1.

Newport's parking options are broken down below.
- On-street meters: Active June 1 to Oct. 31 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., including weekends and holidays. Parking costs $1.25 per hour in increments of 25 cents, except for meters near Easton's Beach, which cost $2 per hour. All meters accept coins and cards.
- Pay and display: the lots at Touro Street, Long Wharf and Narragansett Avenue all have "pay and display" machines that accept credit cards, bills and coins. Residents cannot park for free in these areas, even if they have a sticker.
- Public paid city parking: Parking at the Gateway Visitor's Center costs $2 for the first 30 minutes and $1.50 for each following half-hour. Weekly and months rates are available. The Mary Street lot has a pay-and-display machine and costs $3 per hour or $20 per day. Residents with a valid parking sticker can park in this lot for up to three hours per day by entering their license plate number into the machine. Receipts must be displayed on the dashboard of every car.
