The Vikings Are Coming To Newport On Friday

Billed as the world's largest Viking ship (well, the largest sailing in "modern times") the Draken Harald Hårfagre is sailing into Newport.

NEWPORT, RI—Billed as the world's largest Viking ship (well, the largest sailing in "modern times") the Draken Harold Harfargen is sailing into Newport. The wooden ship is due to arrive at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Bowen's Wharf, according to Trixie Wadson, marketing director, Bowen’s Wharf Company. The arrival ceremony is free. So are visits to the Draken Village. But ship tours and other events, which start Saturday, are paid.

The Viking boat is in Newport until Aug. 13, as part of its East Coast Tour.

“Newport is synonymous with sailing, and this island, with it’s natural harbor is the ancestral home of many merchants and seafarers,” said Bart Dunbar. “As a the host of many Tall Ships events over the years I believe the visit of the Draken ship will be a spectacular attraction in our historic town. The construction of expedition and recreation vessels is near to my heart and closely aligned with our Rhode Island marine industry. We all welcome this great wooden ship.”

There's also an opportunity to volunteer as a crew member. To apply, go to www.drakenhh.com/join-the-crew.
