PROVIDENCE, RI — Widespread Verizon outages were reported across Rhode Island and much of the northeast Tuesday, causing headaches for those working or learning from home.

Outage monitoring site Down Detector reported a large spike in reported service issues with Verizon stretching from Washington, D.C. to Boston. Reports started pouring in a little after 11 a.m. and peaked about 12:15 p.m.

According to the Associated Press, the telacom company said the outage could be related to a cut cable in Brooklyn, New York. The company acknowledged the outage "throughout the Northeast corridor," the AP said, and that some areas already had service restored.
