Providence Police Major David Lapatin told reporters that detectives worked the crime scene early Saturday, identified Hernandez as a possible suspect, and put the word out that police wanted to talk to him. Hernandez called the station and arranged to come in. After several hours of police interviews he was charged with murder.

Lapatin said Camacho and Hernandez had been at a nightclub together and were in the same car heading to an after-hours party. Two other friends were following in another vehicle. The two friends in the second vehicle circled around looking for a parking space. When they returned, they came upon Camacho lying in the street outside the parked car. The driver and the passenger side doors were open. Hernandez was gone.
