North Providence Police Chief Martins Set To Retire Next Month
Police Chief Col. Arthur Martins was honored at a Catholic Mass on Sunday. Deputy Chief Alfredo Ruggiero is stepping up to take his place.

NORTH PROVIDENCE, RI — North Providence Police Chief Col. Arthur Martins is set to retire next month and Deputy Chief Alfredo Ruggiero is stepping up to take his place.
Martins was honored at Mary Mother of Mankind Church at a Catholic Mass on Sunday. The service was attended by dignitaries including Pawtucket Mayor Don Grebien and Senate President Dominick Ruggerio, WPRI reports.
Martins served on the Pawtucket police force for 28 years. He then spent three years as an investigator at the State Attorney General’s Office before joining the North Providence Police Department in 2018, first as deputy chief and then as chief.

Martins in April told The Valley Breeze that he was stepping down for personal reasons, including a desire to prioritize time with his family.
Ruggiero, a retired Rhode Island State Police lieutenant, joined the North Providence Police Department in 2020. Ruggiero was also a U.S. Marine for eight years.
