PAWTUCKET, RI — Pawtucket students are finally heading back the classroom following a full year of distance learning that was initially adopted to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The School Committee in February reversed course and voted to give parents and students the choice to resume in-person learning on a staggered basis in March, ABC 6 WLNE-TV reports. Grades 1-6 may return to the classroom starting March 1; 7th and 8th graders on March 15; and high school students will be able to participate in a hybrid learning model starting March 29.

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Cheryl McWilliams informed families of the renewed in-person learning option in a Feb. 10 letter, and said she was pleased to make the announcement. Pawtucket is the only school district in Rhode Island where a majority of students have been learning remotely since the start of the pandemic.
