2 Bicyclists Hit By Intoxicated Driver In Tiverton: Police
A Little Compton man is facing charges after hitting and seriously injuring the pair of cyclists.
TIVERTON, RI — A Little Compton man is facing charges after crashing into two people on bicycles on Sunday. The victims, a woman from Tiverton and a man from Little Compton, were seriously injured.
The crash happened near 4170 Main Rd. around 8 p.m. When emergency responders arrived, the two victims were lying on the side of the road. The 35-year-old woman sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital. The 20-year-old man was taken to the hospital by helicopter with life-threatening injuries.
The driver, Stephen L. Medeiros, 29, later told officers he hit the bicyclists with his vehicle, police said. Medeiros showed signs of intoxication and failed several field sobriety tests, police said. He was arrested and taken to Tiverton Police Headquarters, where he was charged with two counts of driving while intoxicated-serious bodily injury resulting and one count of duty to stop at an accident resulting in personal injury or death.

Medeiros's bail was set at $20,000 following his arraignment Monday in Newport District Court.
Both victims were still at Rhode Island Hospital Wednesday. The man is in the intensive care unit, where his condition is stable, police said.
