Little Compton Election Profile: Travis Auty

LITTLE COMPTON, RI — Travis Auty is running for a seat on the Little Compton School Committee. The 39-year-old Democrat is a newcomer to elected office.

Auty has been a self-employed realtor since 2015 and holds a bachelor's degree in political science and communications from Salisbury University. He and his wife, Katlyn, has a son, Duke, and a bull mastiff named Lucy who is certified in pet therapy.

Why are you seeking elective office?

I want to give back. I had a great up bringing an educational experience. I want that for my child and all the children of this community. I will be an ally to our teachers, a voice for our parents, and a champion for our children.

What do you believe should be done to contain the coronavirus pandemic, and what would you do to lessen its economic impacts?

Wear a mask and practice social distancing.

Do you believe systemic racism is a problem in America generally and Rhode Island specifically, and if so, what would you do to combat it?

I am running for School Committee. Best way to combat systemic racism is through education. I would suggest reading "A People's History of the United States." by Howard Zinn for all those attending HS throughout RI.

Should the words "Providence Plantations" be removed from the state's name?

Yes

What are the critical differences between you and the other candidates seeking this post?

Our son Duke is about to embark on his educational experience here in Little Compton. I think it's important to have someone in place who has skin in the game and the willingness to be an accountable advocate for our students, teachers, and parents.
