Obituary: Egbert D. Hawes Jr., 83, Retired Little Compton Chief of Police

Egbert D. Hawes Jr., 83, of Little Compton, died unexpectedly, Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016 at the Charlton Hospital.

EGBERT D. HAWES JR., 83, retired Chief of Police of Little Compton, of Pleasant View Dr., formerly of Rumford, died unexpectedly, Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016 at the Charlton Hospital. He was the husband of the late Madeline (Olson) Hawes.

Born May 14, 1933, in Oneco, CT, he was a son of the late Egbert D. Hawes Sr. and the late Emma (Walmsley) Hawes.

Bert joined the Army National Guard in 1949 was activated in 1950 serving in Ausburg, Germany until his discharge in 1952. He graduated from the RI State Police Academy in 1955, and served as a uniformed trooper in every barracks in the State, retiring in 1975 as a Detective Lieutenant. He was appointed the Chief of Police of Little Compton the day after his retirement and served as Chief until his retirement in 2000. He was a life member and past president of the RI Police Chiefs Association was awarded RI Man of the Year by the RI Veterans Council. The Town of Little Compton proclaimed November 4, 2000 "Egbert D. Hawes Jr. Day."

He is survived by 10 children, Jeffrey Hawes of Portsmouth, Kurt Hawes Sr. of Swansea, Patrick "Barry" Hawes, Brian Hawes and Kennedy Hawes Sr. all of Little Compton, Marcia Tainsh of East Providence, Jamie Torres of Sandy, UT and Shannon Norris, Gretchen Helger and Heidi Lewis, all of Little Compton. He also leaves behind 23 Grandchildren and 31 Great-Grandchildren. He was the father of the late Pamela Carnevale and brother of Marion Tameo of East Providence, James Hawes of Marietta, GA, and the late Barbara Hawes.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial Tuesday, Aug. 23, at 10am in St. Catherine's of Siena Church, 74 Simmons Rd., Little Compton. Military honors and burial will follow at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday, 4-8pm, in the Rebello Funeral Home and Crematory, 901 Broadway, East Providence.
