Richard C. Loebs, formerly of Washington DC, died in Tiverton, RI on December 2nd, at the age of 92.

Richard C. Loebs, formerly of Washington DC, died in Tiverton, RI on December 2nd, at the age of 92.
Born in Rochester, NY on January 29th, 1923, he was the son of Carl H. Loebs and Isabelle Clossey Loebs.
After his education in Rochester and matriculation at Princeton University, he served as a Corporal with the Army Field Artillery in the Pacific during WW II. Mr. Loebs returned to Princeton and graduated with the class of 1945 after his wartime service. He later joined the Foreign Service, and made his career there. During that time he was posted with his family to Istanbul, Helsinki and The Hague during the Cold War; he also served in Vietnam in the late 1960’s. He considered Washington DC to be his home for over 60 years.

An avid sailor from his youth, after retirement he enjoyed exploring the wilder & more isolated areas of Chesapeake Bay, the Bahamas and the Canadian Maritimes on his yawl HOPE. He was a proud member of the Cruising Club of America.
He was formerly married to the late Edith Shaw Safe of Rhode Island, and was predeceased by his sister, Virginia Loebs Corrigan of North Carolina. He leaves two sons, Richard C. Loebs Jr., and Peter S.S. Tyler, his daughter-in-law Susan W. Tyler, two grandchildren, two wonderful nieces and their families, and his loving friend Susan Behan.

There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary’s Church, Spring Street Newport RI on Wednesday December 10, 2014 at 10AM. Burial with full military honors will be private. At the family’s request calling hours are respectfully omitted.
The family would like to thank the staff of Sakonnet Bay Manor for their kind and affectionate care of Mr. Loebs. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in his memory to the Potter League for Animals, P.O. Box 412, Newport RI 02840, or to Visiting Nurse Services of Newport County, 1184 East Main Road, Portsmouth RI 02871.
