Recall Issued For Tuna Distributed By Little Compton Fishery

Tuna King brand frozen medallions have been recalled due to unsafe levels of histamine, which can lead to scombroid poisoning.

LITTLE COMPTON, RI — A Rhode Island fishery has issued a recall for frozen tuna sold directly to customers due to unsafe levels of histamine, which could lead to scombroid poisoning. The Tuna King medallions have a best-before date of June 13, 2021.

The product, which comes from Vietnam, was distributed by North Fisheries, LTD, in Little Compton. It was sold in Rhode Island, Connecticut, Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin. Two illnesses have been confirmed in Connecticut, the state's Department of Health said in a release. No illnesses have been reported so far in Rhode Island.

Because the fish is frozen, consumers are asked to carefully check their freezers for the recalled products, which have the following information:

Anyone with the recalled fish in their freezer is urged to throw it away immediately. Cooking the product does not make it safe to eat, the Connecticut Department of Health said.

Scombroid poisoning can lead to tingling or burning around the mouth, flushing of the face, sweating, nausea and vomiting, headache, palpitations, dizziness and rash. Symptoms usually present anywhere from a few minutes to several hours after eating and generally last for a few hours. More severe reactions are possible, but rare.
