The Sogkonate Garden Club thanks International Coastal Clean Up Volunteers

coastal clean up Sept. . 2017

The Sogkonate Garden Club would like to thank all the volunteers who donated their time to clean the Little Compton coastline for International Coastal Cleanup on September 16th.

The 60 people who participated at our local beaches collected 1,700 pounds of trash and litter which was 500 more pounds then last year. This year the biggest increase was in plastic grocery bags and other pieces of plastic and foam packaging. Geoff Dennis did his usual wonderful job of cleaning East and West Islands as well as collecting lobster pots and other large items from various beaches throughout the year. The Sakonnet Yacht Club aided the cleanup process by providing a gathering spot for the area volunteers and once again Kristin Brown came from Vermont to head the Sakonnet Point cleanup. This year her crew collected 1,331 pounds plus 38 bags of trash and 15 lobster pots. Much of this trash came from the break wall. We also want to thank all the Little Compton residents who make a year round effort to keep our beaches litter free.
