Tiverton Resident Promotes Infection Control in Liberia

Dr. Timothy Flanigan went to West Africa to help fight Ebola.

Dr. Timothy Flanigan, of Tiverton, has spent two months training health care professionals about infection control in Liberia.

EastBayRi reported that where most of the training he conducted has been near Monrovia.

Flanigan is an infectious disease specialist at The Miriam Hospital in Providence and a professor of medicine at the Alpert Medical School at Brown University.

He has been assessing the way health care clinic staff handles Ebola rather than aiding patients with the disease. He plans on returning to Rhode Island just before Thanksgiving.

Dr. Flanigan documents his experiences in Liberia with a a blog he keeps on his website. On October 23, he wrote of a physician assistant who was sick with Ebola.

“She was very ill with Ebola and received ZMap (which is an experimental monoclonal antibody against EBV) and had a remarkable recovery,” he said. “During her recovery she provided medical care to many of the other patients in the ETU.”

Dr. Flanigan also wishes to reopen the Catholic Hospital of Saint Joseph in Monrovia to assist in Ebola control. Donations are being accepted.
