Tiverton Residents Uninterested In Rescheduling Halloween

An informal poll from Tiverton police showed that Tiverton residents are overwhelmingly opposed to rescheduling trick-or-treating.

TIVERTON, RI — A frightful forecast isn't dampening the spirits of Tiverton trick-or-treaters. While many communities in Massachusetts and New Hampshire have chosen to delay Halloween festivities due to rain and wind, Rhode Islanders have decided to grab their umbrellas and hit the streets anyway.

On Wednesday night, the Tiverton Police Department posted an informal poll of their Facebook page, asking residents if they thought the holiday should be pushed off due to inclement weather. As of 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, 727 people had cast their votes. 563, or 77 percent, said "Halloween is Oct. 31!" while just 166 said "Let's postpone."

"Happy Halloween, Tiverton!" the department wrote on Thursday morning. "It is obvious from our previous post that Halloween is and will remain October 31! We thank everyone for their input. Please be safe tonight."

When heading out to trick-or-treat, parents are encouraged to accompany young children and make sure kids are visible by carrying a flashlight or wearing reflective tape on costumes. Since Rhode Island has still not had a hard frost this season, parents should also take steps to prevent against mosquito-borne illness, including wearing long sleeves and pants and wearing EPA-approved bug spray.
