Tiverton Woman Charged With Animal Cruelty, 2 Dogs Removed

TIVERTON, RI — A Tiverton woman is facing charges after two severely malnourished, neglected dogs were removed from her home, the Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said Friday. Amanda Medeiros, 30, was charged with one count of unnecessary cruelty to animals and two counts of failing to provide adequate veterinary care.

Tiverton Animal Control was called to the house, where the dogs were plainly visible, "in need of immediate medical attention," the SPCA said. Both dogs, which were described as pitbulls, were removed from the house and brought to a nearby emergency veterinary facility for treatment.

The first dog, an 8-year-old named Remy, was extremely emaciated, with no fat or muscle mass and all of his ribs and bone structures clearly visible. The other, a 5-year-old female named Beni, was also seriously underweight, with a large tumor on her rear hind quarter. Both dogs also had every overgrown nails, the SPCA said.

"We want to thank the RI Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Lieutenant Dan Raymond and Animal Control Officer Jennifer Stills for their cooperation and work investigating this case," Tiverton police said in a statement.
