The Best Fishing Spots in South Carolina

Mark Smith of CIU shares his favorite fishing spots around South Carolina

South Carolina is home to beautiful beaches, winding rivers, and scenic lakes that any outdoorsmen can admire. For the avid fisherman or even a novice, these bodies of water are abundant with fresh and saltwater breeds. Highlighted below are a few of the best places to drop a line and spend a few hours with nature.

Lake Murray
One of my personal favorites and located an easy 30 minutes outside of Columbia, Lake Murray boasts a reputation as one of the most productive lakes for Bass fishing. People come from all over to bass fish in Lake Murray. If Largemouth Bass is not your catch of choice, Lake Murray is also home to Crappie, Catfish, Yellow Perch, and much more. The lake contains a number of man-made fish attractors marked by buoys to enhance your experience and increase your chances of catching dinner.

Lake Jocassee
Lake Jocassee is the only freshwater location you will find in South Carolina that is home to both trophy trout as well as smallmouth bass, making it perfect for any preference. Trout fishing is by far my favorite kind of fishing. I am hearing that many find Lake Jocassee to be a hidden gem as its seclusion contributes to its bounty. Comprised of clear, fresh water from the Appalachian Mountains, fish prosper here all year around. Remember that trout like cool water.

Hilton Head Island
My family and I have been to Hilton Head Island several times and we love it more each time we go. With 12 miles of shores, as well as creeks and streams, Hilton Head Island offers both saltwater and freshwater fishing options perfect for any fishermen. The island is also a popular tourist stop, which is advantageous for the fisherman who does not have equipment of their own or wants to adventure farther from the shoreline for a bigger catch. There are several charting services to bring you farther from the coast for deep sea fishing, and outfitters along the island to rent equipment and tackle. Inshore, nearshore, and offshore fishing options are plentiful throughout the year on Hilton Head.

Lake Marion
Lake Marion is the largest lake in South Carolina at over 110,00 acres in total area, with 300 miles of shoreline. Fishermen can drop a line from one of several piers throughout the wildlife sanctuary, or load their boats from the many boat launch ramps accessible to the public. Lake Marion is also a camp-friendly location, making it a great spot for a family retreat.

Whitewater River
Not for the inexperienced fishermen as I am hearing and reading, Whitewater River originates in North Carolina and flows through to the northernmost part of South Carolina. The river appeals mostly to fly fishermen and is plentiful in brown and rainbow trout. With several waterfalls, some reaching over 400 feet in height, the best fishing spots are accessed by walking up the river on foot. Whitewater River is as scenic as it is remote, making it a favorable location for those seeking extra isolation and relaxation.
