Coroner Identifies Two Killed in Saturday Traffic Crashes

Two women, neither of whom were wearing seatbelts, were killed in separate Saturday crashes.

Richland County Coroner Gary Watts on Sunday identified the two women who were killed in separate Saturday crashes.

Shakimah K. Martin, 20, of Hopkins was killed in a crash around 9 a.m. at the intersection of Leesburg and Mt. Elon Church Road in lower Richland County.

She was in the backseat of the vehicle and not wearing a seatbelt. She was ejected from the vehicle during the collision. She was transported by EMS to Palmetto Richland Memorial and pronounced dead at 2:25pm.

An exam conducted Sunday morning showed that Martin died from a head injury.

Laurie L. Steiner, 41, of Hopkins was killed in a crash on Harmon Road around 8:45 p.m.

She was the driver of a vehicle that left the roadway and struck a tree. Steiner was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. She was transported by EMS to Palmetto Richland Memorial andpronounced on arrival.

An exam conducted Sunday morning showed that she died from injuries suffered in the crash.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating both of the collisions.
