In Op-Ed: Sen. Lindsey Graham Speaks Out On Aid to Egypt

Op-Ed says it's time to pull the plug.

For decades, the United States has provided aid to Egypt even though it was a democracy in name only. As the largest country in the Arab World in both in terms of population and economy, it is in America's interest to make sure Egypt is peaceful, or so the argument went.

But given the upheaval of the Arab Spring, the context in which that argument was made is no longer applicable.

After the uprising two and-a-half years ago, Egypt held elections and in a process widely thought to be fair, voted in its first president ever, Mohamed Morsi.

But feelings on Morsi quickly soured and he was ousted by the military three weeks ago. In addition to bringing more instability to an already unstable region, Morsi's ouster presents the United States with a problem. A 1986 law makes it illegal for the US to give foreign aid to a country whose leader was installed via coup, which appears to be the case in Egypt.

In an op-ed to be published Monday in The Washington Post, Sen. Lindsey Graham, along with longtime colleague John McCain of Arizona, makes the case to hold off on further aid to Egypt.
