"Senator Lautenberg was a dedicated public servant who was committed to making our country a better place on behalf of all Americans. As the last World War II veteran in the Senate, his leadership earned the respect of his colleagues on both sides of the aisle. My thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

Lautenberg died of viral pneumonia at the age of 89. He served in the Senate from 1982-2001 and from 2003-2013. He was absent for several weeks earlier in the session due to health issues.
