Henry McMaster Wins South Carolina Primary Runoff Election
South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster had the support of President Trump in Tuesday's runoff primary. He defeated John Warren.

South Carolina Republicans have chosen Gov. Henry McMaster over businessman and veteran John Warren in Tuesday's runoff primary. The GOP gubernatorial race was the most watched runoff primary with President Trump backing McMaster. Meanwhile, Democrats elected Brandon Brown over Doris Turner in the U.S. House District 4 race.
McMaster was appointed to the position of governor after Nikki Haley was picked to be Trump's Ambassador to the United Nations. Trump appeared at a rally in South Carolina on Monday and urged voters to support McMaster. Trump said that if McMaster was defeated in Tuesday's runoff, the media would say it was a "humiliating defeat" for the president himself, per The New York Times.
As of 9:15 p.m. Tuesday, McMaster was leading with 53 percent of the vote and 84 percent of precincts reporting.

In contrast to Haley, who had publicly criticized Trump while he was seeking the GOP nomination for president in 2016, McMaster was an early supporter who endorsed Trump before the state's presidential primary in 2016. According to The Washington Post, at the time, McMaster was the highest ranking elected official in the country to endorse Trump in the Republican presidential primary. McMaster, who was the lieutenant governor prior to assuming the governorship in 2017, is campaigning for his first full-term.
As The Post and Courier explains, voters who participated in the June 12 primaries can only vote in the runoff primaries for their parties. The paper also notes that even if voters did not vote in the June 12 primary, they can cast their votes in the runoffs.
