State to Seek Contract for Credit Monitoring Resulting from Hack

South Carolina's Budget and Control Board (BCB) gave its approval to seek bids on the contract to monitor taxpayers whose information was compromised as a result of the Department of Revenue cybersecurity breach.

The BCB met for less than five minutes on Tuesday and unanimously voted to begin the bidding process, according to the Associated Press.

The General Assembly has set aside $10 million for the winning bid. Gov. Nikki Haley was criticized when it was disclosed that Experian signed a 1-year, $12 million no-bid contract in the aftermath of the hack. That deal ends in October.

So far, about 1.4 million people have signed up for the monitoring, or about a fifth of the 6.4 million taxpayers and businesses who had their Social Security and banking information taken.
