Update: Police Detonate Suspicious Bookbag

Several media reports say multiple suspicious packages have shut down Assembly from Lady to Washington.

Update, 3:03 p.m.: Columbia Police detonated a suspicious bookbag in dowtown Columbia Wednesday afternoon.

The bookbag was found on Washington Street near Assembly Street, according to the police department. Police were planning to re-open Assembly at Washington around 3 p.m. 

Another suspicious bookbag found on Assembly Street near Lady Street contained only clothing. That area re-opened around 2 p.m.

Original story, 1:21 p.m.: Several suspicious packages have shut down Assembly Street from Lady to Washington streets in downtown Columbia, according to multiple media outlets.

WIS-TV, ABC Columbia and others are reporting the streets are blocked, and traffic downtown has become a "nightmare."
